Crown Backing Plate – CR109598

Every other piece of a Crown drum brake mounts to the backing plate, the stationary steel surface that carries the shoes, springs, and actuating hardware on the non-rotating side of the assembly. On Crown lift trucks it bolts to the axle end and gives every other brake component a fixed reference to work against, which is why a bent, cracked, or corroded plate throws off shoe alignment and has to be replaced rather than straightened.

At about 1.45 pounds it is a solid stamped and machined steel piece sized to the wheel end it mounts to. Because it locates the shoes, the plate takes reaction load every time the brakes are applied, and elongated mounting holes or a warped face are the signs it has reached the end of its service life. Replacing the backing plate restores the flat, square platform the rest of the brake hardware depends on for even shoe contact and consistent stopping force.
