Springs fail by fatigue. Over many cycles a compression spring can take a permanent set and lose free length, weaken so it no longer delivers its rated force, or crack and break a coil, and any of these lets the assembly it preloads go slack or return sluggishly. Replacing the spring restores the original rate and return force to the mechanism.
Match the wire diameter, coil outside diameter, and free length to the spring being replaced, since those three dimensions together set the spring rate and the load it delivers at a given compressed height.
