Restoring the return or tension force the original delivered, this replacement spring takes over once the installed spring has sagged, stretched, or broken and stopped holding its rated load. A coil spring works by storing energy as it deflects and releasing it as it recovers, so the force it applies depends on holding its designed free length and rate.

A spring that has lost its set no longer recovers to that free length, so it cannot return a mechanism fully or hold it under the correct preload, which is the usual reason for the swap. The result on the equipment is a mechanism that returns slowly, sits loose, or fails to seat, all traceable to a spring that no longer carries its rated force.

Match the free length, wire diameter, coil count, and end style to the spring being replaced, since those four together set both the force the spring produces and how it seats in its pocket. A spring correct in length but wrong in wire diameter or coil count will carry a different rate and change how the mechanism behaves.
