A coiled steel spring restores the return tension and free length that a worn or fatigued original loses as it cycles, keeping the assembly it serves loading and returning to its rated position. Wire diameter, coil count, and free length are the dimensions that set the load rate and travel the spring delivers in service.
Returning the assembly it serves to its rest position, this coiled steel spring pushes or pulls back against motion and is stocked as a replacement for a worn or fatigued original in the same location. A spring does its work through stored energy, and as long as it holds its free length and spring rate, the mechanism it drives, a linkage, a pedal, a latch, or a return, resets the way it should.
Springs fail slowly. Repeated cycling relaxes the steel so the coil loses free length and return tension, and once it no longer pushes or pulls back to its rated position, the assembly starts to hang, drag, or fail to reset. A cracked or collapsed coil is the more obvious end of the same wear.
Match the wire diameter, coil count, outside diameter, and free length to the spring coming out, since those dimensions set the load rate and travel together, and a substitute off in any one of them will not load the same even if it fits the space.
