Arcing is what wears them out. Every make and break draws a small arc that erodes and pits the copper face, and over thousands of cycles the tips burn down, build resistance, and begin to overheat or stick, at which point replacing them restores a clean, low-resistance switching contact without replacing the whole contactor. They are usually changed as a set so both faces wear evenly.
Match the 3/0 contact size and the tip shape and mounting to the contactor they serve, since tips of a different size or pattern will not seat on the contact carrier.
