This Hyster woodruff key is the semicircular steel key that locks a hub, gear, or pulley to a shaft so they turn together, carrying torque so the hub cannot slip under load. The key transmits torque through the joint so the hub cannot slip on the shaft under load. Under overload it shears or rounds off, and once it fails the hub spins free and no longer drives; it is also replaced as a matter of course whenever the joint is opened for service.
