Seated in a machined groove on a shaft or inside a bore, a retaining ring holds a bearing, gear, or similar component in its axial position and absorbs the thrust that would otherwise let the part creep out of place. This Raymond retaining ring is small but load-bearing: the groove locates it, and the ring's spring tension is what actually keeps the assembly captive under running loads.
A ring that has been sprung during a past removal, worn thin, or fitted in the wrong size loses that grip, and the component it secures begins to work loose, introducing end play into the assembly. Installing a correct ring restores positive retention.
Match the ring to the shaft or bore diameter and to the width and depth of the groove it seats in. A ring off in size or thickness will not sit square in the groove and cannot hold the thrust the position demands.
