Sprung into its groove, it acts as a removable shoulder that keeps parts stacked and located without a permanent fastener, sized to the groove diameter and the shaft or bore it retains so it seats and holds under load.
Sprung into a machined groove, a snap ring seats as a removable shoulder that holds a bearing, shaft, or component in position against axial movement, doing the job of a locating shoulder without a permanent fastener. It flexes to clear the groove during installation, then springs back to grip, so it can be fitted and removed with the right pliers whenever the assembly is serviced.
Match the ring to the groove diameter and to the shaft or bore it retains, since a ring oversized or undersized for the groove will not seat and hold. Confirm as well whether the application calls for an internal ring that seats in a bore or an external ring that seats on a shaft, as the two are not interchangeable.
