Riding against the commutator of a DC traction, pump, or hoist motor, this carbon motor brush carries current into the spinning armature through a sprung block that wears down by design to hold contact. As it shortens the motor begins to arc, lose power, and run hot; replacing it at the wear line keeps full torque flowing and protects the commutator.
A motor brush rides against the commutator of a DC traction, pump, or hoist motor, carrying current into the spinning armature through a sprung block of carbon that wears down by design as it maintains contact. This is that consumable brush, the part that determines whether the motor gets clean, full current or starts to arc, lose power, and run hot as the brush shortens.
Carbon brushes are a scheduled wear item: as they reach their wear limit, motor performance drops, sparking increases, and the commutator itself can be damaged if worn brushes are left in service. Replacing them at the wear line keeps the motor delivering full torque and protects the commutator. Match the brush size, cross-section, and lead and spring arrangement to the motor it serves, since brushes that look alike differ in these details and one that does not seat correctly will not conduct.
