Brushes are the primary wear part in a DC motor. They wear shorter with running hours, and as they shorten the motor loses power, sparks at the commutator, and eventually stops making good contact, which is the signal to rebrush the motor. Replacing the full set with fresh springs at the same time restores clean, full-pressure contact and protects the commutator.
