Carbon brushes carry working current from a motor's fixed terminals into its spinning commutator, and this set supplies four of them, the full complement for a lift truck drive or pump motor that seats a brush at each pole. Each brush is a graphite block that rides against the commutator under light spring pressure, conducting current continuously while sliding across the copper segments turning beneath it.

Because they are sacrificial by design, carbon brushes shorten steadily as the motor runs, and a motor that arcs at the commutator, sparks, or loses power under load is often running on brushes worn close to the end of their travel. Replacing all four together keeps brush length and contact pressure even around the commutator, something a mix of old and new blocks cannot hold. When fitting the set, match the brush footprint and thickness to the block coming out, since each brush is sized to its holder and a block even slightly oversized will bind in the guide.
