Carbon brushes are the sliding contacts that carry current from a motor's stationary housing into its rotating armature, riding against the commutator under spring pressure so the connection stays made even as the armature spins. Hyster builds this brush set for the electric drive or pump motors on its lift truck line, and it comes as four pairs, enough to service a full motor's brush positions in one replacement.

As a normal wear item, carbon brushes shorten with every hour of run time, since the sliding contact against the commutator is inherently a friction interface. A brush worn down too far loses spring tension and full contact area, which shows up as sparking, reduced power, or a motor that runs hot and inconsistent. Left unaddressed, a badly worn brush can also score or burn the commutator itself, turning a simple brush swap into a more expensive repair.
