A motor brush carries current into the spinning commutator of a DC motor, riding against it under spring pressure so power reaches the armature while it turns. Carbon brushes are designed to wear so the harder commutator does not, which means a brush shortens over its service life and eventually reaches the limit where its spring can no longer hold it in firm contact. A worn brush sparks, loses contact, and can leave a motor running weak or intermittently before it stops carrying current at all.
