A steer motor turns electrical power into the rotational force that swings the steered wheel to follow operator input, driving the steering system every time the truck changes direction. On an electric lift truck the steering is powered rather than purely mechanical, so this motor is what actually moves the wheel, working through the steering gear or linkage to position it.

As the brushes, bearings, or windings wear, the motor loses torque, draws more current and runs hot, grows noisy, or stops responding altogether, and any of these leaves the truck hard or impossible to steer and out of safe service. Because steering is constant during operation, a steer motor accumulates duty quickly and is a common wear replacement.

A replacement motor restores full steering authority. Match it to the steering setup it drives so the mounting, the shaft or gear interface, and the electrical connection line up with the original, since steer motors vary in mount pattern and output shaft even at similar ratings and are not freely interchangeable.
