A rotary encoder reports shaft position or speed back to the truck's control system, converting mechanical rotation into the electrical pulse signal a controller reads to manage steering, drive, or lift motion. The controller counts those pulses to know where a shaft sits and how fast it turns, so the accuracy of that feedback directly governs how smoothly and repeatably the commanded function behaves.

As a sealed feedback device mounted at a rotating joint, an encoder lives with vibration, temperature swings, and the risk of contamination reaching its internal sensing element over a long duty life. When it drifts, skips counts, or fails outright, the controller loses accurate position data, which surfaces as erratic operation, inconsistent response, or a stored fault code that can be mistaken for a controller problem. Replacing the encoder restores the precise feedback the control system depends on.

Match the output type, pulse count, shaft or bore size, and connector to the unit being replaced, since encoders that look alike can differ in resolution and signal format and will not interchange freely.
