An encoder reports the speed and position of a rotating shaft back to the truck's controller, converting motion into the electrical pulses the drive system reads to regulate motor speed and direction. On an electric lift truck it closes the loop on traction and lift control, so the controller knows how fast and which way a motor is actually turning rather than commanding it blind.

An encoder that drifts, misses pulses, or fails outright shows up as erratic speed control, fault codes, or a motor that will not run smoothly, since the controller is acting on bad position data. Replacing a failed encoder restores accurate feedback to the control loop.
Match the encoder by its pulse count, shaft or bore size, and connector against the unit it replaces, since an encoder wrong in resolution will feed the controller a signal it cannot scale correctly.
