Inside a hydraulic control circuit, a shuttle valve picks the higher of two competing pressure signals and passes it downstream, isolating the lower line so the two sources never fight each other. Raymond built this shuttle valve to perform that selection in the hydraulic system of a lift truck, where it commonly lets a single actuator or gauge respond to whichever pump or supply line is active at the moment.

The valve works purely on differential pressure. Internal pressure shifts a check element to one side and seals off the weaker signal automatically, with no electrical connection and nothing to adjust. That simplicity is the point of the part; it routes the dominant signal reliably without any external control.

A shuttle valve that leaks internally or sticks lets pressure bleed between the two circuits, which shows up as sluggish or crossed hydraulic response and is the usual reason one is replaced. Confirm the port thread size and configuration against the valve being removed, since shuttle valves of similar function are built to different port patterns and will not seat correctly if the ports differ.
