A reach truck's defining feature is its ability to extend and retract the mast forward and back independent of the truck's chassis, and this rear single reach cylinder is one of the hydraulic actuators that makes that motion possible on Raymond reach trucks. Working as part of the reach mechanism, it converts hydraulic pressure into the linear push and pull that carries the forks and load out toward a rack and back in for travel, a motion the truck performs on nearly every cycle.

Because the reach function operates constantly through a shift, its cylinders see more duty cycling than almost any other hydraulic component on the truck. Seal wear inside the cylinder eventually shows up as drift, where the reach carriage creeps out of position under load, or as a loss of smooth, even extension and retraction. A worn cylinder can also leak fluid past its seals, dropping system pressure and forcing the pump to work harder to hold position.

At 20 pounds, this cylinder carries the mass expected of a lift truck hydraulic actuator built for repeated cycling under load. It is positioned at the rear of the reach mechanism, sized and configured to move the mast smoothly through its full reach travel.
