A Crown woodruff key is the semicircular steel key that locks a hub, gear, or pulley to a shaft on Crown lift trucks so the two turn together. It seats in a matching semicircular slot cut in the shaft and engages the keyway in the hub, carrying torque so the hub cannot slip under load. A woodruff key shears or rounds off under overload, and the hub then slips.

Under overload the key is the part designed to give, shearing or rounding off before more expensive components fail, and once it does the hub slips and stops driving the shaft. It is replaced whenever the joint is opened for service or when a slipping hub shows the key has already failed. Match the key's width, length, and diameter to the one being removed, since a woodruff key has to fill both the shaft slot and the hub keyway to transmit torque without play.
