Friction is the whole job of a Crown brake shoe, whose lining presses against the drum to slow a lift truck, making it the wear part a brake job most often centers on. On Crown lift trucks the shoe rides on the backing plate and swings out under the cam to bring its lining into contact with the drum, so the arc of the shoe and its lining thickness set how much braking surface meets the drum.

It spans about 10 inches across the arc on a body roughly 3.8 inches deep, and at about 3.7 pounds it is a stout curved steel shoe built to hold its shape under repeated heat and load. As the lining wears down toward the shoe, braking force drops and pedal travel grows, the familiar signal that the shoes are due. Replacing worn shoes as a set restores even contact and balanced stopping across the axle. Match the shoe arc and width to the drum it runs in, since a shoe sized to a different drum will not seat evenly on the friction surface.
