Opening and closing an electrical circuit on command, this switch restores reliable make-and-break once the original's contacts have worn, pitted, or stopped seating. A switch is the point where a circuit is deliberately completed or broken, so its contacts carry the current of whatever it controls and take an arc every time they part under load, which is what wears and pits them over time.

Failure shows up as intermittent operation, a circuit that will not complete, or contacts that stick closed, and any of those leaves the function the switch controls unreliable. Because a switch is defined as much by its electrical rating as by its shape, a replacement has to carry the same current and voltage the circuit puts through it, not just fit the same opening.

Match the contact arrangement, actuation, terminal style, and electrical rating to the switch being replaced, since switches that look alike differ in every one of those and a mismatch changes how the circuit behaves.
