Precise resistance tracking through the whole sweep is the point of the part, and mechanical wear on the element, contamination, or an erratic output from the original unit is what typically calls for replacement. A worn potentiometer sends a jumpy or dead signal that shows up as uneven or unresponsive control. Installing a fresh unit restores accurate control input.
