A retaining ring is replaced whenever it is removed for service, since a ring that has been sprung open may no longer seat fully, and it is also replaced once it has lost tension or deformed and no longer grips its groove. A ring that does not seat completely can pop out under load and let the part it retains walk off its shaft.
