Storing energy as it compresses or extends and releasing it to drive a component back to position, this spring holds tension or return force on the mechanism it serves. It is the part that gives an assembly its consistent return action, cycle after cycle.

A spring is replaced once it takes a set, loses free length, or cracks, since a tired spring no longer returns the force the assembly was built around. That shows up as sluggish, weak, or incomplete movement wherever the spring does its work, and because it runs under constant load it wears predictably over time.

Match the free length, wire diameter, and coil dimensions to the spring coming out, since rate and fit are what determine whether a replacement does the same job. A spring close in size but off in rate will load and return differently.
