A carbon brush carries current between the stationary and rotating parts of an electric motor, riding on the commutator to keep the circuit live as the armature spins. This is a single brush, and as a wear component it is designed to sacrifice itself: the carbon block wears down against the commutator over the motor's service life and is replaced before it reaches its limit.

A worn brush loses contact pressure and length, which shows up as reduced motor power, arcing at the commutator, or intermittent operation as the connection breaks down. Replacing brushes at the wear line keeps the motor running at full power and protects the commutator from the damage a brush worn to its backing causes. Match the brush dimensions and the lead and terminal style to the motor it serves, since brush size and connection are what determine whether it seats and rides the commutator correctly.
