The coil closes a heavy contact only when energized by a low-current control signal, which lets a small operator input or logic circuit command the large currents that a lift truck's traction and hydraulic systems draw.

Contacts are the part that wears; they pit and burn from the arc drawn every time the circuit makes and breaks, and after enough cycles the solenoid no longer closes cleanly or drops out reliably. Match the replacement to the coil voltage and contact rating of the unit being serviced, since a solenoid sized to the wrong circuit will chatter or fail to hold.
