On Crown lift trucks it holds coolant inside the casting and, in a freeze plug's traditional role, gives expanding coolant a place to push out before it can crack the casting.
A freeze plug corrodes from the coolant side over years of service, and a rusted or weeping plug is a common source of a slow coolant leak that is easy to miss until the level drops. Pressing in a fresh plug restores a clean, sealed bore.
Match the plug diameter to the bore it seats in, since a freeze plug seals by an interference fit and the 2-3/8 inch size must match the machined opening to hold pressure and stay put.
