The Yale tapered roller bearing assembly is a cup-and-cone bearing designed for Yale lift trucks to carry combined radial and thrust load on a rotating shaft, wheel, or steer pivot. The tapered rollers run between an inner cone and an outer cup, so the bearing supports both the sideways load and the end thrust that a wheel or pivot puts on the shaft, which is why a tapered roller design is used where a plain ball bearing would not hold up.

A tapered roller bearing wears through its rolling surfaces. As the rollers and races fatigue, the bearing develops play, runs rough, and turns noisy, and if left in service it can seize and damage the shaft it rides on. Replacing it at the first sign of roughness or play protects the surrounding parts.
