A brush assembly packages the carbon motor brush together with its holder, spring, and lead, so the current-carrying contact and the hardware that tensions it against the commutator are renewed as one unit. Where a bare brush replaces only the wear block, the assembly also restores the spring pressure and lead connection, resetting contact on a motor whose brush gear has worn or fatigued.

Motor brushes and their springs wear together: as the carbon shortens, spring tension and contact force fall off, current delivery drops, and the motor arcs and loses power. Replacing the full assembly resets the whole contact system at once. Match the assembly's brush size, holder style, and lead arrangement to the motor it serves, since these vary between motors and govern whether it mounts and conducts correctly.
