The E-style profile pushes on radially from the side of the shaft rather than over the end, which lets it locate a part between two features where a ring installed over the end could not reach. Match the ring to the shaft groove diameter and width, since an external retaining ring is sized to a specific groove and one too large or too small will not seat and hold. Forklifts Etc. carries it as the external E-style retaining ring.
