This replacement spring returns a mechanism to position or holds tension against a load, restoring the original spring rate once fatigue, corrosion, or a broken coil has taken the old one out of service. It brings back the defined push or pull the mechanism was designed around so the assembly works to its intended force.
This replacement spring does one of the two jobs a coil spring is built for: returning a mechanism to its position after it moves, or holding steady tension against a load so a part stays seated or preloaded. In either role it works by storing the force put into it and pushing or pulling back, and it does that job every cycle the mechanism runs.
Springs wear out predictably. Fatigue from repeated cycling, corrosion that pits the wire, or a broken coil all rob a spring of its original rate, and once the force falls off the mechanism it serves gets sluggish, fails to return, or loses its preload. Installing a spring built to the original rate restores the action the assembly was designed around.
Match the free length, the wire diameter, and the number of coils to the spring being replaced, since the spring rate depends on all three together and a spring that looks nearly identical can pull or push with a noticeably different force.
