Non-contact detection is the function here, and Raymond builds this proximity sensor to sense the presence or position of a target without touching it, switching its output when a metal part or actuator comes within its sensing range. Proximity sensors handle position feedback, end-of-travel signals, and interlock checks in a lift truck's control system, and they have no moving parts to wear, so they are replaced when the sensing element fails, the output goes erratic, or the housing or cable is damaged. A failed proximity sensor sends a false or missing signal that can disable the function it reports on, which is why an intermittent one gets replaced rather than left in service.
