Like any elastomer seal, it is a wear item. Over time and heat the material hardens, takes a compression set, or nicks, and the joint then weeps or seeps until the ring is replaced. Swapping in a fresh O-ring at the first sign of seepage restores a clean seal before the leak grows or the fitting is damaged. Match the ring by inside diameter and cross-section thickness to the groove it seats in, since an O-ring wrong in either dimension will not seal.
