Pressed by the operator's foot, this Raymond switch tells the truck that someone is in position to operate it, acting as the presence or control input many lift trucks require before they will drive or lift. A foot switch takes constant mechanical cycling, one actuation every time the operator steps on and off, so it is built around a switching element that has to make and break reliably through thousands of presses.

In the truck's electrical system it opens or closes a control circuit. Depending on the machine it serves as a deadman presence input, an accelerator interlock, or a function enable, but in every case the truck's response depends on it switching cleanly.

Foot switches fail from worn contacts, a broken return spring, or a cracked housing, and the symptom is usually a truck that responds intermittently or not at all to the pedal.
