The Yale tapered roller bearing carries combined radial and thrust loads on a rotating shaft or wheel, functioning as a cup-and-cone bearing in Yale lift trucks. The tapered rollers run between an inner cone and an outer cup so the bearing supports both the sideways and the end-thrust loads that a wheel, axle, or steer pivot puts on the shaft, which is why this bearing type is used where a plain radial ball bearing would not hold up.

A tapered roller bearing wears through its rolling surfaces. As the rollers and races fatigue, the bearing develops play, runs rough, and turns noisy, and left in service it can seize or damage the shaft it rides on. Replacing it at the first sign of roughness or play protects the surrounding parts.
