Tall or stacked loads tend to tip back over the fork carriage toward the mast and the operator, and a load backrest is the vertical guard that stops them, this welded steel unit mounting to the carriage on Crown lift trucks. At roughly 55 pounds, it is a substantial structural component rather than a light bracket, built to take the push of a shifting load without deflecting.

The backrest bolts onto the carriage behind the forks and forms a vertical barrier that keeps pallets, boxes, and long stock from sliding rearward into the mast channels and the operator compartment as the mast lifts and tilts. Its height and grid pattern are sized to contain a typical palletized load while still clearing the mast rollers through full lift travel.

Because it lives directly in the load path, a load backrest takes repeated contact and can bend, crack at the welds, or lose grid bars over years of hard duty, at which point it no longer holds a load reliably and is due for replacement. When fitting, match the backrest to the carriage width and mounting style on the truck, since backrest patterns vary across Crown's lineup and the unit has to seat square to the carriage to guard properly.
