The internal design suits parts assembled from within the bore rather than clamped over an external shaft.

It carries the thrust that would otherwise let the retained part walk out of position, holding the assembly stacked correctly through the vibration of daily operation. Whenever the bore it secures is opened for service, the ring is replaced, since a ring that has been sprung open or nicked no longer holds its full load.

Match the ring to the bore groove diameter and thickness on the assembly it retains, since an internal ring sized to the wrong bore will not seat against the wall or hold.
