An external snap ring seats in a machined groove on a shaft and retains the components riding on it against axial movement, a small part holding an assembly in position. Raymond catalogs this one to its groove size, and a stretched, sprung, or missing ring lets the parts it holds work loose, so a correctly seated ring keeps the assembly located.
An external snap ring seats in a machined groove around the outside of a shaft and holds the components riding on it against axial movement, keeping an assembly located in position. The spring tension of the ring is what retains it in the groove, so a ring that has been stretched, sprung open, or overstressed during a prior removal loses its grip and can let the parts it secures work loose. Steel construction gives it the spring memory to snap back into the groove and hold under repeated duty, and installation or removal uses snap ring pliers that engage the lug holes at the ring ends.
Match the ring to the shaft diameter and the groove it fits, since a retaining ring has to seat fully in its groove to hold, and one sized wrong will not seat or will not retain the load.
