A leaf chain is a stack of steel plates joined by hardened pins, chosen for lifting duty because the flat-plate construction carries high static and dynamic load in a compact section as it flexes over the sheave. Lift chain is a wear item by design. Under constant load cycling the pins and plate holes wear, and the chain elongates measurably over its service life, which is why maintenance programs check lift chain for stretch against a wear gauge. Once a chain reaches its elongation limit it is replaced as a complete run, not spliced or patched, because a stretched or worn lift chain is a carriage-drop and safety risk on a loaded mast.
