It seats in the housing bore with its sealing lip riding on the shaft, holding gear oil or grease inside an axle, transmission, or motor housing while blocking dirt and water from entering along the shaft.
An oil seal is a wear item. The elastomer lip hardens and wears a groove against the turning shaft over time, and once it does the housing begins to weep or throw oil past the shaft, which both loses lubricant and lets contaminants in. Replacing the seal restores the oil-tight boundary and protects the bearings and gears behind it.
