Side shift carriages ride against replaceable glides that take the sliding contact of side-to-side travel, and this Crown glide provides that low friction surface so the carriage shifts smoothly while the softer glide, not the harder metal it rides against, absorbs the wear.

As the glide wears thin, side shift movement turns loose or notchy and the mating surfaces begin to gall, which is the point to replace it. A new glide restores even, controlled side shift travel and shields the surrounding structure from the wear it would otherwise take directly.

Match the glide to the side shift assembly being serviced, since its thickness and profile set how the carriage seats and how tightly it slides. A glide off in either dimension leaves the shift either too loose or binding.
