Leaf chain carries the lifting load in a forklift mast, its stacked steel plates and hardened pins running over a sheave to raise and lower the carriage as the hydraulics extend. This chain is cataloged for Crown lift trucks, where it takes the full weight of the load and fork carriage through every lift cycle.

Unlike a roller chain, a leaf chain is built entirely from riveted link plates, which gives it the tensile strength to handle heavy vertical loads in a compact width. Over a long duty cycle the pins and plates wear and the chain elongates, and a stretched lift chain is both a lifting-height problem and a safety one, which is why worn chain gets replaced rather than run to failure.
