The 75W-90 grade is a wide-range gear oil, thin enough to flow and lubricate at startup in cold conditions while still holding film strength under the heat and load a drive gearbox generates during continuous operation.
Gear oil breaks down over time as heat and metal particles from normal gear wear accumulate in it, gradually losing the film strength that protects gear teeth and bearings from metal-to-metal contact. Servicing the gearbox with fresh 75W-90 on the interval Raymond specifies keeps that protection in place and helps prevent the accelerated wear that runs on degraded oil.
