Bearing Taper Cone – BR-277

The cone is the inner, rotating half of a tapered roller bearing, carrying the tapered rollers on their race so the assembly can take both radial and thrust load at once, which is why tapered bearings are used where a wheel or shaft sees side loading as well as weight. In a load wheel or axle position the cone rides on the shaft while its rollers run against a matching cup, the two set together to a specific preload.

This part is the cone half, the rotating element that seats on the shaft. It works only as one side of a matched pair, so its condition and the cup's are tied together.

A tapered bearing is replaced when the rollers or race show wear, pitting, or roughness, and the cone and cup are normally renewed together, since a used cup will wear a new cone prematurely. Confirm the cone bore and the roller taper against the bearing being replaced, and match it to the correct cup, since a cone seats properly only against the cup it was designed to pair with.
