Trapping airborne dust and grit before it reaches the system it protects, an air filter keeps abrasive contamination out of the intake or ventilation path it guards. The filter media is sized to catch particles down to a rated size while still passing enough airflow, so a clean element protects downstream components without starving them of air.

As the media loads with debris it restricts flow, which is why an air filter is a scheduled replacement rather than a permanent part. A clogged or damaged element either chokes airflow or, worse, lets unfiltered air slip through a tear or a poor seal, defeating the whole purpose of the filter.

Renew it on interval or whenever it shows heavy loading or damage. Confirm the filter's outer dimensions and its sealing configuration against the element being replaced, since a filter has to seal fully in its housing to force all flow through the media rather than letting air bypass it around the edges.
