Matched as a cup and cone set, this tapered roller bearing carries the combined radial and thrust load of a load wheel, with the cone (the inner race and rollers) seating inside the cup (the outer race) to take side loading a straight ball bearing cannot. Tapered rollers spread the load across a line of contact, which is why they are used at wheel positions that see cornering and thrust as well as straight rolling.

Because the cup and cone wear as a matched pair, they are always replaced together; running a new cone against a worn cup ruins both quickly. A tapered bearing signals wear through play, roughness, or a growl that rises with speed, and a load wheel bearing left to fail can seize the wheel.
