On stand-up and reach equipment the gate switch is part of the operator-presence and interlock chain, the electrical confirmation that the compartment is closed before certain functions are allowed.
As the right hand version, it is handed to one side of the compartment and is not interchangeable with the left hand unit, so the side it mounts on determines which assembly is correct. A gate switch that no longer makes or breaks its contact cleanly can leave the truck acting as though the gate is open when it is closed, or the reverse, which is why a failed switch is replaced rather than bypassed. Supplied as a complete right hand assembly, switch and mounting together, for direct replacement of the worn unit.
