Raymond Pinion Gear – RA401-175

The smaller driving member in a Raymond lift truck gear train, this pinion gear meshes with a larger gear to step motor speed down into working torque. It carries the load every time the truck accelerates or climbs a grade, transmitting drive from the motor into the wheel end through that reduction.

Hardened teeth and a precise tooth profile keep the mesh tight, which holds noise down and spreads load evenly across each tooth rather than concentrating it on a few. A pinion is the harder-working half of a gear pair because it turns faster and meshes more often, so its teeth tend to wear, chip, or round over first. Worn teeth on the pinion then accelerate wear on the larger gear it drives, which is why a tired pinion is replaced before it takes the mating gear with it.

Verify the pinion's tooth count and pitch match the Raymond gear set it runs in before installation, since a pinion that does not match its mating gear will not mesh correctly.
