The pinion drives the larger ring gear to rotate the axle, and the two are lapped together at the factory so their tooth faces share load evenly across the mesh.

Because the pair is lapped as a unit, it is supplied and replaced as a matched set rather than as individual gears. A worn set shows up as driveline whine, excess backlash, and a rough or clunking drive under power, the result of fatigue and wear at the tooth faces after long service under load.

Installing a fresh matched set restores a correct, quiet mesh and the proper backlash the axle was built with. Set pinion depth and backlash to specification on installation, since a mated pair only runs quietly when its mesh is adjusted correctly.
